What to do When You Have a Tiny Computer Disaster

Tuesday of this past week, I was oh so fortunate to wake up to a mini disaster.

I started the morning normal- fed the dogs, fed the cats, fed the chickens, made coffee and started my morning ritual of obsessing over all of the accounts I manage. Which one got a retweet or a new follower? Comments on that post- sweet! Who can we network with today? Savannah is a social butterfly town off and on the internet.

After a solid 30 minutes… frozen wasteland appears on my screen. Can’t click. Can’t move the mouse. I got nothing. Surprisingly, the freeze was the least of my worries. Oh noooo. The continuous beep beep beep pause beep beep beep pause…. that noise indicted this was no small issue.

Fortunately for me, I possess half of Apple’s products (not literally) so turning to my phone, I googled ‘frozen macbook beeping.’ Can someone please explain to me why my 3-year-old Macbook Pro that wasn’t exactly a cheap purchase is malfunctioning?? It’s had such a short life. My first Macbook from 2008 is still going strong. Why is this newer, sleeker silver one that controls my productivity on a daily basis not showing up to the job today?

That could be a RAM problem. Or a logic board. Basically the whole insides. Whatever the answers were, there was a hefty price tag to each resolution some reaching near the $1,000 mark. Um… no thanks.

Did you know that you can buy a whole new laptop for that amount of money? Here’s where my title plays in (finally!).

Don’t freak out. Yes, you have been thrown a very large, very sad curveball. You and your computer have many memories together. My Macbook Pro and I did work all over the University of Georgia campus. We’ve job searched. We’ve started a business together for goodness sakes. It was like family! So I repeat- don’t freak out.

Prepare Prepare Prepare. You must have a back-up hard drive that you regularly use. Back-up your information. It’s valuable no matter what it is. Luckily this time, I was able to avoid the frozen beeping just long enough by putting it on a flat surface to back mine up one last time.

Make the Purchase, and FAST! Goodbye favorite laptop. Hello Macbook Air. I just started this business, I can tell you I don’t have the funds to drop on a brand new laptop, but it had to be done. It was actually pretty painless. Apple has financing available for businesses. Even got to start an Apple business account. I ordered a refurbished Macbook Air for less than $1,000. It is definitely up to the job. I can’t even tell it is refurbished. All of my data- easily transferred. It’s like I didn’t even lose a laptop. Even my desktop image is the same. And, it only took two days for my new laptop to arrive. Crisis averted.

Don’t be upset. It’s bound to happen. The way I reasoned with myself- I bought the Macbook Pro in February 2011 for $1,100. That exactly three years. That’s $30.00/month. Not bad. It had seen its prime. Fingers crossed I get at least a 3-year life span on this one.

Thanks for reading my non-traditional, non-industry-related post, and I wish you luck with your next crisis!
